Create a Sewing Station with IKEA's RÅSKOG Utility Cart!
This was originally published to Blogger on 11/15/2015. I was only dabbling in writing about my projects at that time, and gave up on it for years. I have added recent thoughts at the bottom!
The kitchen table is a gathering place for the family and also serves as the workspace for our projects. Imagine the chaos that arises any time crafting overlaps with dinner time. Packing up the sewing machine, tools, and notions is endlessly frustrating when the project is unfinished, and it can lead to WIP pile-up. One "solution" is to create a craft room or other craft space. I've been dreaming up craft room ideas and wishing for a sewing table for every holiday and birthday; but realistically, I don’t have space in my home or the budget. Who would?
The other day I was looking through some adorable pins on how to use the very versatile IKEA's RASKOG Utility Cart. They seem to be in everybody's craft rooms to organize their essentials. Here, I was struck with inspiration. I saw the potential for a portable sewing table and storage system. I went to IKEA and found more goodies to get my sewing organized. Below, I'm sharing a short shopping list and ideas on how to get your own system going. Enjoy!
You will need:
Assembly took less than twenty minutes. I tried to look for a tutorial but they all said it was soo hard. Not true! Find a friend and follow the directions included.
I'm not going to show you a "Before" photo of my craft corner because it's disgraceful. My things were shoved into a closet and it was an ordeal to unpack everything; it was equally painful to put everything away again. You can imagine how easy procrastinating was! Here are the "During" and "After" pictures:
The assembled cart…
Not even all my stuff!
Hook on your baskets and fill them with notions!
There she is! All done!
As you can see, the top of the cart is flush with the sewing machine. This is the most important feature of this system because it will work with your table to create an extended sewing surface.
Does a craft room feel overrated now? Yes. It totally is overrated because THIS is portable and it fits in the closet. Cute, right? Thanks for stopping by!
This was a great option for me at the time the article was written, when I didn’t have many tools or a large fabric stash.
If sewing is a small hobby of yours or you are getting a young person started, this is all the space you need. Rolling carts are available EVERYWHERE now, and in so many great styles! Measure the width of your sewing machine before you purchase and go with the style that matches your aesthetic.
