Kaitlin’s Sewing Room Essentials
#1 - It starts with the sewing machine!
My grandma and mom bought me a basic Singer sewing machine for my tenth birthday and I used it regularly for almost 14 years. I then upgraded to my Janome because I wanted more features. The reality is: my new machine does a lot of amazing things which I use infrequently. Most sewing can be done on a basic machine.
Here are some options if you’re looking to purchase one:
A great beginner sewing machine
My current sewing machine (love it). I will talk about it on my YouTube!
Thrift one! I have picked up some fantastic sewing machines at the thrift store for my friends, usually $20 to $50. People get rid of them for many reasons other than being broken.
#2 - Ironing board and iron
Yes, using an iron is that important! They’re the secret to perfect seams. The options below are good for small spaces. Wall mounted or table top will get you by in tight spaces, and I use mats for large projects I need to lay out.
#3 - A variety of scissors
One for fabric, one for thread, one for everything else. To preserve the life of your fabric scissors, only use them on fabric. Use embroidery scissors on thread, ribbon, etc. Use craft scissors to cut out paper, open packaging, and cut through zippers.
#4 - Pins & Needles…
Any will do, but I personally love pearlized pins because they look classy AF and can be seen against most surfaces. Clips are also great to have on hand for thick or otherwise tricky fabrics.
#5 - Containers & Organizers…
You’ll accumulate patterns, fabric, thread, and notions on an as-needed basis. I recommend clear containers so you can see what you have. Everyone’s space is different, so I won’t give you any specifics here but I plan to go over my organizers on a different post.
